ANIMAL TECHNICAL RESCUE
BEYOND HUMAN RESCUE
El Dorado Search and Rescue launched a new Animal Technical Rescue Team (ATR) in 2022, drawing on experienced members from our Mounted and Technical Rope Rescue Teams.
This high-performance team was made possible by the gracious donations and grants from The Halter Project and the Dave and Cheryl Duffield Foundation. Their support funded hundreds of hours of specialized training and essential equipment, positioning EDSAR's ATR Team as a leader in animal rescue.
With this rigorous training and advanced equipment, EDSAR's ATR Team is well-prepared to respond to emergencies involving large animals, such as horses.
Their dedication and commitment increase the chances of a successful outcome and reuniting these animals with their owners.
Learning the proper technique to lift a large animal to reduce stress and keep animals and rescuers safe.
EDSAR's ATR Team works beyond the normal scope of search and rescue. They are specially trained in:
Large Animal Technical Rescue: Rescuing large animals, such as horses, cows, and other livestock, from hazardous situations that can include animals falling or being trapped in ditches or other confined spaces.
Fireline Safety: Understanding fire behavior under different conditions, tactics, strategy, safety, and proper use of protective equipment.
All Hazards: Emergency preparedness and response to a wide range of natural or human-caused disasters.
Air Operations: Animal handling, restraint, equipment, rigging, safe loading and unloading in emergencies that require helicopter transport.
Flood environments: Animal behavior, handling, transportation, teamwork, and safety when rescuing large animals in flood conditions.
Transportation Accidents: Skills to safely and effectively extricate large animals involved and possibly injured in transportation accidents.
The advanced training taken by EDSAR and ATR Team members enabled them to assist with the evacuation and care of animals during the Caldor, Mosquito, and Crozier Fires as well as supporting several local community events, including The Tevis Cup 100 Mile Endurance Ride to help ensure the safety of riders and their horses.
The EDSAR ATR Team participated in Cal OES’s “Sentinel Response 2022,” a first-ever integration of Animal Responders in a large scale disaster training event.
Continuous training and effective collaboration with other agencies, such as fire departments, veterinary clinics, disaster response organizations, and other large animal and wildlife rescue organizations, is essential for successful animal rescues.
EDSAR hosts multi-agency animal rescue training funded by The Halter Project.
